By default, in WooCommerce stores, gift cards are only applied to the cart subtotal, not the total payable amount. This can be frustrating for users as they still have to pay for other charges, such as tax and shipping, even if they have enough balance in the gift card to cover the entire order.
However, with WebToffee WooCommerce Gift Cards, you can apply the gift card to the total payable amount, including the cart subtotal, shipping charges, and any other relevant fees.
Example scenario
You have a $1000 gift card and are planning to make the following purchase:
- Cart value = $100
- Tax = $10
- Shipping = $2
- Packing charges = $3
- Convenience fee = $1
In this scenario, the total payable amount is $116. Although the customer has a $1000 gift card, without the new setting, the gift card would only wave off the cart value, leaving the customer to pay the remaining $16.
Solution – applying gift card on shipping and other charges
To enable the functionality of applying gift cards to the total payable amount in your WooCommerce store:
- From the WordPress dashboard, navigate to Gift cards > General setting > General.
- Under Gift card usage setting, you can find the Gift card application settings.
- Apply before tax – A gift card will be applied to the cart subtotal, and the tax will be applied to the remaining cart value.
- Apply after tax – Gift card will be applied to the cart subtotal after calculating tax for the entire cart value.
- To apply a gift card to the total payable amount, select the Apply after tax option and enable the checkbox labeled Apply on tax, shipping, and other charges.
Enabling this option will apply the gift card to the entire payable amount, including tax, shipping, and any additional charges, ensuring the customer can fully utilize their gift card balance.
