Configuring Coupon Settings in Automation Emails

Last updated on March 11, 2025

Coupons are a great way to encourage purchases in your automation emails. Whether it’s a Welcome Email, Cart Abandonment Email, Win-Back Email, or Thank-You email, you can configure the coupon settings to generate unique discount codes for each email or use an existing coupon across multiple emails. This article will walk you through configuring coupon settings in automation emails using  WebToffee E-commerce Marketing Automation to fit your marketing strategy.

Configure Coupon Settings in Automation Emails

By default, if the coupon settings are left unaltered, a new coupon code is generated for each automation email sent to a user. However, in some cases, you may want to send the same coupon code in every email instead of generating a new one each time. Follow the below steps to configure coupon settings:

📌

Note: Coupons have to be configured each time you set up an automation.

Step 1. Access the Automation Email Template Editor

  1. Head to Automations from the WebToffee Marketing dashboard.
  2. Click on the automation you want to configure (Welcome, Cart Abandonment, Win Back, or Thank You).
  3. Click on the Email editor block.
  4. Click on Edit Content.

Step 2. Head to the Coupon Settings

  1. Inside the email template, scroll to the Coupon Code Block.
  2. Click on the coupon block to adjust the configuration.
  3. The Coupon Configuration section appears on the right of the screen.

Step 3. Choose Between a New or Existing Coupon

Option 1: Generate a New Coupon for Each Email

What Happens?

  • Every time the automation email is sent, the system will create a unique coupon code for each customer.
📌

Best Use Cases:

  • Best for one-time use coupons to keep them exclusive and prevent reuse.
  • For exclusive, personalized discounts (e.g., cart abandonment recovery).

Example:
A customer abandons their cart, and the system generates “SAVE10-XYZ123”, a unique code for that specific customer.

Option 2: Use an Existing Coupon Code

What Happens?

  • Instead of generating a new code, the email will always include the same coupon created in the store’s backend.

Steps to Select an Existing Coupon:

  1. Click on the Select a Coupon dropdown.
  2. Choose the existing coupon you want to apply.
📌

Best Use Cases:

  • When you want to run a long-term promotion without generating new codes.
  • For Welcome Emails and Thank You Emails, where a standard discount applies.

Example:
All new subscribers receive an email with “WELCOME10”, a reusable 10% off coupon for their first purchase.

Step 4: Adjust Coupon Rules & Expiry Settings

📌

Note: This step applies only to new coupons

  1. Select discount type (percentage or fixed amount) for the coupon.
  2. Add a coupon value (10% or amount).
  3. Define the coupon’s expiry date (e.g., expires in 7 days).
  4. Limit coupon usage by setting a minimum order value and excluding it from sale items if needed.
📌

Example Scenario: A WooCommerce store wants to re-engage inactive customers who haven’t made a purchase in the last 60 days by offering a special 20% discount in a Win Back Email Automation.

Coupon Configuration:

  • Discount Type: Percentage-based discount (20% off).
  • Coupon Value: 20% off on the next order.
  • Expiry Date: Expires in 5 days to create urgency.
  • Usage Limitations:
    • Minimum order value of $40 to qualify for the discount.
    • Cannot be applied to sale items.

Outcome: Inactive customers receive a personalized win-back email with a limited-time 20% off coupon, encouraging them to return and shop again. The 5-day expiration and minimum order requirement ensure urgency while maintaining store profitability.

Step 5: Customize the Coupon Appearance

  1. Adjust the padding, font size, and color of the coupon.
  2. Modify the width, height, and font for better visibility and branding.

Step 6: Save Settings

After making the necessary configurations, click Finish Editing to save the coupon settings.
