Getting Started with Product Recommendations

Last updated on October 28, 2025

Showing the right product at the right time can make all the difference in turning a visitor into a buyer. With Product Recommendations in the WebToffee eCommerce Marketing app, you can automatically suggest products that your customers are most likely to be interested in without any extra effort on your part.

We’ve built three simple but powerful ways to recommend products:

  • Upsell → Encourage customers to go for a premium or higher-value option.
  • Cross-sell → Suggest items that naturally go with what’s already in the cart.
  • Frequently Bought Together (FBT) → Offer popular product bundles that customers often buy in one go.

These recommendations can appear in pop-ups during checkout or even within your automated emails, helping you increase sales while providing shoppers with a smoother, more personalized experience.

Why Enable Product Recommendations?

Turning on product recommendations isn’t just about adding another feature; it’s about making your store work smarter for you. Here’s what it can do:

  • Lift conversions by showing customers suggestions that match what they’re looking for.
  • Grow your average order value (AOV) by nudging shoppers toward upgrades or add-ons.
  • Cut down cart abandonment by making it easier for customers to find products they’ll actually want to buy.

Accessing Product Recommendations

To access the recommendations feature:

  1. From the Marketing app dashboard, go to the left sidebar.
  2. Head to the Marketing & Sales section and click Recommendations.

    • Customize the primary button (background color, text color, size, border radius).
    • Customize the price color to match your store’s design.
    • Adjust widget settings like heading size, show/hide the product quantity selector, and enable/disable the product variant selector.
    • Adjust image settings (show a secondary image on hover).
    • Add custom CSS for advanced styling and finer control.
  2. Click Save to apply these settings across all your recommendation bundles.

Overview of Recommendation Types

1. Upsell

Encourage customers to purchase a higher-value product instead of, or in addition to, the one they are considering.

  • Example: If a customer is viewing a basic backpack, you can recommend a premium leather backpack.
  • Goal: Increase order value by nudging customers towards premium options.

2. Cross-sell

Suggest related items that pair well with the customer’s selected product.

  • Example: If a customer adds a laptop to the cart, recommend a laptop sleeve and wireless mouse.
  • Goal: Promote complementary products to complete the purchase.

3. Frequently Bought Together

Display groups of products that are often purchased as a bundle.

  • Example: A T-shirt, jeans, and sneakers offered as a complete outfit.
  • Goal: Encourage multi-product purchases in one click.

Understanding Bundles

Each recommendation type allows you to create and manage bundles. A bundle consists of:

  • Recommendation mode → Choose between Manual or Automatic.
    • Manual: You’ll go through three setup steps (trigger products, recommended products, and display settings).
    • Automatic: Only trigger products are required; recommendations are generated for you based on purchase history and other factors.
  • Trigger products → Products/categories that trigger the recommendation.
  • Recommended products → The products shown as suggestions.
  • Display settings → Where and how the recommendation will appear (pop-up/email).

Managing Bundles

On the specific recommendation dashboard (e.g., Upsell, Cross-sell, or Frequently Bought Together), you can view:

  • A list of bundles you’ve created under that recommendation type.
  • The trigger and recommended products for each bundle.
  • Icons showing where each bundle is displayed (cart, checkout, post-purchase, email).
  • Action buttons to edit, delete a bundle, or update display settings.

How Recommendations Are Displayed

Once configured, recommendation bundles can appear at key moments in the customer journey:

1. On Popups (Modal Overlays)

Triggered during specific actions:

  • Add to Cart Action – Show recommendations when an item is added to the cart.
  • Proceed to Checkout Action – Show recommendations before checkout.
  • Post-Purchase Page – Show recommendations after completing an order.

2. Inside Marketing Emails

You can also include product recommendations inside your automated emails by adding the Product Recommendation block in the email editor.

  • Example: A thank-you email that recommends complementary products based on the customer’s purchase.
  • Benefit: Extend upselling and cross-selling opportunities beyond your store.
