Upsell Recommendations for Shopify Product Pages

Upselling is a sales strategy in which you encourage customers to purchase a more expensive, upgraded, or premium version of a product they are considering or have already decided to buy. Offering Upsell Recommendations for Shopify product pages can significantly increase your store’s average order value (AOV) and overall revenue. Upsell recommendations are efficient because they target customers already in a buying mindset, making them more likely to consider and accept these suggestions.

In this article, let’s set up an upsell recommendation for your Shopify store Product page using the SF Product Recommendations app by WebToffee.

  1. Install the SF Product Recommendations.
  2. Navigate to Apps > SF Product Recommendations.
  3. Click on Create new recommendation.

  1. Select the Product page to display the Upsell recommendations. Upsell recommendations are also available on Cart pages.
  2. Under the recommendation type, choose Upsell.

Configure upsell recommendations

The image below shows all available options for configuring an upsell recommendation for your store. Once all the steps in the window are completed, the recommendations will be made live in your store.

Step 1: Select a recommendation type and trigger

  1. The application allows you to display three varieties of upsell recommendations based on your interests and requirements. The available options are:
    • More quantity as upsell: When a customer adds a product to the cart, they will be recommended the same product in larger quantities with discounts.
    • Higher Priced Variant: When a customer adds a product to the cart, they will be recommended a higher-valued version of the same product(most likely an upgraded version).
    • Custom products as upsell: This option allows you to display a custom product you choose as an upsell recommendation.
  2. Once a type is selected, set a trigger for your recommendation. The recommendations will be displayed when the selected trigger products are added to the cart. You can trigger the offer for:
    • All products
    • Specific products
    • Products from specific collections

  1. If you opt for Custom products as upsells, you can choose which products will be displayed as recommended upsells(A maximum of 3 random products can be selected per trigger).

Step 2: Set a recommendation title

The recommendations widget has a default title and subtitle that works well for most upsell scenarios, but you can customize them in the Widget title section as needed.

Step 3: Add an upsell discount

Upsell recommendations are incomplete without a bonus discount. Under the discount section, you can provide discounts for users opting for upsell promotions.

  • The discount is provided as a percentage value. Enter the corresponding value in the Discount Value field.
  • You can combine the upsell special discount with other ongoing product, order, and shipping discounts.
  • You can also schedule the special discount to be available only on selected days.

Step 4: Customise widget appearance

Next, to customize the appearance of the recommendation widget, click on Customize under Customise widget appearance.

You have various options to customize the widget’s look and feel. These include selecting a display layout, customizing multiple text types, buttons, and alignments, and much more.

The Visual preference window will provide a wide range of customization options and a live preview of how the widget will appear on the store.

  1. Customization options—The sidebar contains a wide range of customization options for the widget’s appearance.
  2. Preview – The preview provides a clear idea of how the recommendation widget will appear in the store based on the customization options applied in live time.
  3. Preview mode – Preview option for different devices. The preview will change based on the device type selected. The available preview options are:
    1. Desktop
    2. Tablet
    3. Mobile

  • Widget layout – Customize the layout, number of products to display, display style, and more.
  • Product info – Customize product info content, including price, title alignment, font color, and more.
  • Action button—Customize the Add to Cart button’s display, text, action, background color, and font color.
  • Discount – Customize the discounts related to texts and background properties.

After adjusting the appearance to your preferences, click the Back button at the top left corner to return to the main recommendation configuration page.

Step 5: Generate the widget

After the configurations, clicking the Create new recommendation generates the new widget.

If App embed functionality is enabled for SF Product Recommendations, the recommendation will automatically be added to the store. Otherwise, you have to install the widget manually in your store.
