WebToffee’s GDPR Cookie Consent Plugin is Now a Google Certified CMP

We are excited to announce that our GDPR Cookie Consent Plugin is now listed as a certified CMP by Google. What does this mean to our users? Read along to find out more.

As new standards of data privacy are coming up, it is crucial that publishers should be aware of Google’s consent management requirements for serving ads in the EEA and UK and the significance of a Google certified CMP.

In this blog, you will learn about Google’s latest consent management requirements and why it is important for publishers and ad vendors in EEA and UK. If you are an existing user of our GDPR Cookie Consent plugin or looking for a CMP for your website, this article is for you!

Let’s begin.

What Is a CMP?

A Consent Management Platform (CMP) is a tool that enables websites, publishers, and organizations to collect and manage user consent for processing their personal data. It helps websites to comply with data privacy laws such as GDPR and CCPA.

When a visitor lands on a website, they might see a popup or banner asking for consent to load cookies on their browsers. This popup or banner is provided by a CMP integrated into the website. Once a consent signal is received from the users, the website will be able to display ads from the vendors to the users.

From January 16, 2024, onwards, Google has made it mandatory for websites using Google AdSense, Ad Manager, or AdMob to use a certified CMP when showing ads to EEA and UK users.

Google has certified certain CMPs that comply with their latest consent management standards and IAB’s Transparency and Consent Framework (TCF) guidelines. Websites and publishers that rely on ad revenue from third-party vendors now have to use any of the certified CMPs to continue serving ads to EEA and UK consumers.

Publishers using ad tech providers that are not registered with IAB can continue to use them through Google’s Additional Consent specification.

How Does Google Certify a CMP?

CMPs registered for the certification will be assessed by Google against their criteria focused on TCF compliance. Google will ensure whether the CMPs have integration with IAB and support their Additional Consent specification. After the review process, Google will list the CMP in its list of certified CMPs.

What Does This Mean to Our Users?

We have always wanted to improve our GDPR Cookie Consent plugin to meet the latest privacy standards. With the Google-certified CMP status, we have achieved another milestone for our plugin, and our valued users can continue using Google’s advertising services without compromising their compliance with privacy regulations.

What Should Our Users Do?

Websites that don’t display ads to users in the European Economic Area (EEA) and the United Kingdom (UK) don’t need to make any changes to the plugin settings. However, for those who do show ads to users in these regions from third-party vendors, here are the steps to ensure compliance with Google’s latest consent requirements:

  • Step 1: From your WordPress dashboard, go to GDPR Cookie Consent Plugin’s settings page.
  • Step 2: Make sure the cookie bar is enabled.
  • Step 3: Select the type of law (Applicable only to GDPR).
  • Step 4: Enable the Enable IAB TCF 2.2 support checkbox.
  • Step 5: Enable the Support Google’s Additional Consent Mode checkbox if you are using ad tech providers not registered with IAB.
  • Step 6: Click on Update Settings.
