WebToffee’s GDPR Cookie Consent plugin comes with an in-built scanner that will scan your website and identify all cookies and scripts on your website. Using our database of cookies, the scanner will categorize cookies, and the results are made available as a Cookie list that can be enabled on your consent banner.
Step 1: Scan your website
From the dashboard, navigate to Cookie Consent > Manage Cookies > Cookie Scanner, and click the Scan for Cookies button. You have successfully initiated the scan!

It may take a few minutes to a few hours to complete the scanning of your website. This depends on the number of pages to scan and the website’s speed
Step 2: Check scan results
Once the scanning is complete, your cookie banner will be auto-updated with the list of cookies detected. You can see the scan results from the Scan history table.

Click on the View button to see a detailed result for a selected scan.

Identify Cookies Installed by Your Website on Your Browser
Laws like the GDPR require checking and identifying cookies on your website to ensure compliance, and using tools like the GDPR Cookie Consent Plugin can simplify this process. The plugin helps you identify and manage the cookies your website installs in visitors’ browsers. There are various methods to check for cookies, and the GDPR Cookie Consent Plugin offers an efficient solution for ensuring your website meets legal requirements.
1. Identifying cookies using a free online tool
There are online tools that can help you analyze and list the cookies that a website installs on a computer. One such free online tool is CookieServe. Simply input the website’s URL into CookieServe for a quick scan, and it produces a detailed report of the cookies used within seconds. This method ensures efficient and accurate identification of cookies for website analysis.
2. Identifying cookies using the Developer Console
Utilizing the development console provides a straightforward approach to identifying cookies installed in your browser through a website. Below are the methods for identifying cookies set by a website on popular browsers like Chrome, Firefox, and Safari.
Clear the cache and cookies to guarantee accurate results before checking a site’s cookies through the development console.
For Google Chrome
Step 1: To open the developer console, right-click on the page and click on Inspect.

Step 2: Go to the Applications tab within the developer console.
Step 3: Expand the Cookies dropdown under the Storage section. Click on each domain to see the cookies they installed.

For Mozilla Firefox
Step 1: Right-click on the page and click on inspect.
Step 2: Go to the Storage tab and select the Cookies drop-down menu to view the list of cookies installed by each domain on the site.

For Safari
Step 1: Right-click on the page and click on Inspect Element to open the developer console. If you are using Apple macOS, you can use a two-finger click.
Step 2: Navigate to the Storage Tab in the developer console and click on Cookies.

Identifying the cookies your website installs on a user’s browser is essential to complying with major cookie laws. If your website utilizes cookies, you can add a cookie compliance banner.

Is it possible to schedule the scan to say run every month, or is there a trigger where I can run/trigger the scan programmatically?

Hello Grant,
Thank you for reaching out. At the moment, the scheduled scan feature has not yet been implemented in the plugin. However, we’ve noted your request and will make sure to add it to our development pipeline for a future release.

I was happy when i found this, and i hoped it was as easy as it sounded, but even though i followed all steps, it will not put my cookies in the GDPR consent plugin via the scanner !! It says that there are no cookies on my websites, but i know for a fact that it is NOT true… so what should i do now? I am planning to get my money back for this plugin, it does not work!

Hello,
What happens if I remove some of the default categories (like functional) because the scanning reveals that my site doesn’t use any of them, but later on a new scan reveals new cookies, will those categories be added again automatically?

Hi Marc,
That is correct. The scanner is capable of handling that.

Hi,
I manually added a cookie with the corresponding javascript in the “Head script” section, but the javascript appears in the rendered code when the consent is OFF, and disappears when the consent in ON.
Did i misunderstand something ?
Thanks in advance,

Hey There – Is there any way to limit the number of URLS that the scanner will index? We have a large site with 8k or so urls and the scanner keeps timing out. Thoughts?

Hi,
Although there is no option to skip URLs, you can control the number of URLs scanned per iteration under the Cookie Law Settings > Advanced tab. Try setting a lower value if scanner times out.
