How to Get Started with WooCommerce Gift Cards (Pro)?
Last updated on September 30, 2026
WebToffee WooCommerce Gift Cards is a powerful solution that integrates store credit and gift card functionality into your WooCommerce store. With this plugin, you can:
Offer store credit as a flexible payment option.
Sell gift cards as digital or physical products.
Provide store credit-based refunds to retain sales.
Refund orders as store credit, with or without creating a WooCommerce refund.
Manage store credit balances efficiently from the backend.
Understanding Store Credit
Store credit is a prepaid balance that customers can use to shop without paying cash or using a credit card. This balance can be kept in the customer’s account or issued as a voucher, which they can use at checkout. Customers can keep this balance in their account or receive it as a voucher to use at checkout.
Activating Store Credit in Your Store
Once the plugin is activated, your WooCommerce store gains access to the following store credit features:
Store Credit Wallet: Customers store and use credit for purchases.
Store Credit Coupons: Discount codes based on store credit.
Refund to Store Credit: Issue refunds directly as store credit.
WooCommerce Gift Cards: Digital or physical gift card options.
Manual Credit Adjustments: Adjust customer balances manually from the backend.
Sell Gift Cards as a Product in Your Store
When you sell gift cards as a product, customers can buy store credit for themselves or as a gift. Customers can use gift cards only in the store where they bought them.
Steps to Create a Store Credit-Based Gift Card Product:
From the dashboard, go to Gift Cards > General settings > General.
Turn on Enable gift card product.
In Order status to generate gift cards, select the order status that triggers the gift card, such as Completed.
Optionally, under Gift card code settings, add a Prefix and Suffix in Coupon format to brand your gift card codes, and set the Length of the coupon code (6 to 16 characters, 12 by default).
Click Save.
The plugin now creates a demo gift card product in your store.
Set up gift card product
Gift card purchase page
To customize the product:
Go to Gift Cards > Gift card products. You’ll find the demo gift card product here.
Edit the demo product to change its image, name, amounts, templates, and usage restrictions. Under Usage restriction, you can also set a Usage limit per gift card to control how many times customers can use each gift card. Leave it empty for unlimited use.
To rename the fields customers see on the product page, such as the recipient or message fields, go to Gift Cards > General settings > Product page and enter your own labels under Fields to be shown.
Click Add New to create additional gift card products.
With WooCommerce Gift Cards, store owners can also manually send gift cards to customers from the backend. This allows merchants to issue gift cards for promotions, rewards, or special occasions without requiring a purchase. Customers receive the gift card via email and can redeem it at checkout. Steps to Send a Gift Card:
From the dashboard, go to Gift Cards > Send gift card.
Select a gift card template and enter the Credit amount.
Enter the recipient’s email address in Recipient email(s) and your name in Sender name.
Add a Gift card message and any usage restrictions you need.
In Email language, select the language for the gift card email. The dropdown lists only languages with an installed translation. Leave it as Site default to use your site’s language.
Click Send email.
Send gift cards to users
Gift card received by email
👉
Note: Purchasing/receiving a gift card does not automatically add the balance to store credit. It only appears in the wallet or Manage Store Credit page once the user redeems it to the store credit balance/wallet.
Redeem Gift Cards
Whether a gift card is purchased from the store or sent directly by the store owner to the customer, customers can use it in two ways.
Similar to coupons, you apply the gift card code at checkout. The gift card remains valid until the balance is exhausted.
Redeem the gift card for store credit in your wallet. Users can use their wallet balance at checkout, simplifying the management of multiple gift cards.
📌
Note: If you block gift card usage on certain dates, such as sale days, customers can’t apply gift cards at checkout on those dates. To set this up, go to Gift Cards > General settings > General and add the dates in Exclude gift card usage on selected dates. This restriction doesn’t apply to the store credit wallet, so customers can still use their wallet balance on excluded dates.
Track gift card usage: Go to Marketing > Coupons to see where customers used each gift card. In the Store credits used in order column, click the icon next to a gift card to open the list of orders that used it.
Enabling the gift card purchasing option in your WooCommerce store is just one of the main features of WebToffee WooCommerce Gift Cards. There is so much more you can do with the plugin:
Store Credit Wallet
A Store Credit Wallet is a digital balance system that enables customers to store and manage their credit for future transactions. Instead of using traditional payment methods, customers can apply their wallet balance directly at checkout.
Manage Store Credit
With WooCommerce Gift Cards, store owners can monitor and adjust store credit balances from the backend. This page also holds the Store Credit Refund Behaviour setting, where you choose how the plugin records refunds to store credit.
To manage user store credit, go to Gift cards > Manage store credit.
This page displays all users along with their store credit balances. Store owners can track store credit usage and adjust balances as needed.

Refund to store credit
With WebToffee WooCommerce Gift Cards, store owners can issue refunds as store credit instead of cash or the original payment method. This approach keeps funds within the store while providing customers with a convenient way to receive refunds.
The plugin adds the refund amount to the customer’s store credit wallet, and they can use it to pay for their next order. To issue a refund as store credit:
The plugin offers two ways to refund to store credit. Choose one before you issue refunds:
Go to Gift Cards > Manage store credit.
Under Store Credit Refund Behaviour setting, select a refund flow:
Existing Store credit refund flow: Creates a WooCommerce refund and adds the amount to the customer’s store credit wallet. This reduces net sales in WooCommerce Analytics.
New Store credit refund flow: Adds the amount to the customer’s wallet without creating a WooCommerce refund. Your net sales stay unchanged.
Click Save changes.
This setting affects only new refunds. It doesn’t change store credit you already issued or your existing Analytics data.
To refund with the existing flow:
Go to WooCommerce > Orders and open the order.
Click Refund and enter the refund amount.
Click Refund [amount] to store credit.
Refund to Store Credit – Existing flow
To refund with the new flow:
Go to WooCommerce > Orders and open a paid order, such as one with the Processing or Completed status. The Refund to store credit button doesn’t appear on unpaid orders, such as pending payment orders.
Click Refund to store credit.
Enter the refund quantities for the line items, or type the Refund amount directly. The panel shows how much you’ve already refunded and the Total available to credit.
If you entered line item quantities and want to return those items to your stock, keep Restock refunded items selected.
Optionally, add a Reason for refund. The customer can see this reason.
Click Refund [amount] to store credit and confirm.
Refund to Store Credit – New flow
The plugin adds the amount to the customer’s store credit wallet and sends them a Refund to store credit email.
To see which orders you refunded to store credit, go to WooCommerce > Orders. The Refunded to store credit column shows the amount credited for each order. The column shows amounts refunded through the new refund flow only.

Send Products as Gifts
The Send as Gift feature allows customers to purchase gift cards equivalent to a product’s value and send them to someone else.
Steps to Enable Send Product as a Gift:
From the dashboard, head to Gift Cards > General settings > Send product as gift.
Enable Send product as gift.
Customize settings such as button name, restrictions, and display options.
Now, a “Send as Gift” button will appear on selected product pages, allowing customers to send personalized gift cards.

Hi,
Send Product as a Gift: if purchaser chooses to download the gift card (instead of sending it via email to the receiver), how can I add a custom field? I need to add a “How to redeem gift card” text.
Best,
Riccardo

Hi,
I have enabled the gift cards on a webshop where clients can email the gift card, print it or ask for a physical gift card. Once ordered, as store admin (woocommerce), how can we see which of these three options is selected? This is not clear in the order overview.
Thanks for your input.

Hi Niels,
Thank you for your question!
You can identify which gift card delivery option was selected by the customer by checking the order details section. Here’s how:
1. Go to the order edit page in WooCommerce.
2. Scroll down to the “Gift Cards Purchased” section.
3. Then, look for the following:
If the recipient email address is filled in, the customer chose the “Email to recipient” option.
If the recipient email field is empty, it means the customer selected either:
“Let me print the gift card”, or
“Send physical gift card”
To distinguish between those two:
If the “Send physical gift card” option was selected, you’ll see a field labeled something like “Physical card: Yes”.
If that physical card field is not present, it indicates the “Let me print” option was selected.
This should help you easily identify the chosen delivery method for each order. If you need any further assistance, reach out to our support team, they are happy to help you.

Is there a way to allow customer’s to determine the amount of the gift card, or is it only predefined amounts? If I leave that “Set predefined amount” blank, then there’s no option/text box for the customer and the amount just says ‘0’.
