Create Frequently Bought Together Recommendations in Your WooCommerce Store

The WebToffee eCommerce Marketing Automation app allows you to increase sales by suggesting ‘Frequently Bought Together’ bundles to your customers. To get started, navigate to Marketing & Sales > Recommendations in the web app and select ‘Frequently bought together.’ You can either handpick complementary products manually or use the automatic mode to let the app suggest items based on your store’s sales data. These bundles appear as popups during checkout or inside your automated emails, helping customers complete their set with just one click.

Prerequisites

  • Configure General Settings
    Before creating your first upsell bundle, set up how your recommendation pop-ups will look and behave across your store. To do this:
    • Go to the Recommendations page.
    • Click the General Settings icon in the top-right corner.
    • Adjust the styles and display options to match your store design.

Step 1: Navigate to Product Recommendations

  • From the app sidebar, go to Marketing & Sales > Recommendations.
  • Click on Frequently bought together.

Step 2: Start a New FBT Bundle

  1. Click Add bundles.
  2. In Setup bundles:
    • Enter a Bundle title (e.g., Dining & Decor Bundle).
    • Choose a Recommendation mode:
      • Manual – you handpick trigger + recommended products (4 steps).
      • Automatic – the app suggests items from purchase data (skips the “Select recommended products” step).

Step 3: Select Trigger Products

Pick the product(s) that, when added to the cart, should trigger the FBT suggestions.

  • You can search, select specific products, or switch to categories.
  • Example trigger: Round White Coffee Table.

Choose the complementary items to show with the trigger product, typically 2-3 items.

  • Example picks with the Coffee Table trigger: Minimalist Vase, Modern Wall Clock, Rustic Wooden Dining Chair.

Step 5: Configure Display Settings

This step lets you choose where and how your bundle will appear to customers, along with the text they’ll see.

  • Pop-ups (modal overlays):
    • Select actions that trigger a pop-up display
      • Add to cart (great immediate add-ons)
      • Proceed to checkout (last-minute boost)
      • Post-purchase page (instant follow-up sale)
  • Email editor:
    • Insert the Product Recommendation block into Thank You / Win-back automations to show this bundle in emails.
  • Popup content:
    • Add the following pop-up content
      • Title (e.g., Dining Essentials in One Set)
      • Button text (e.g., Upgrade My Dining)

Step 6: Save the Bundle

  • Click Update bundle to save and activate the bundle.

Example: Creating a four-product FBT bundle

  • Let’s see how the FBT recommendation appears in the front end. The bundle consists of the following:
    • Trigger product: Round White Coffee Table
    • Recommended products: Rustic Wooden Dining Chair, Minimalist Vase, Modern Wall Clock
    • Popup title: Dining Essentials in One Set
    • Button text: Upgrade My Dining

When the trigger product is added, the FBT recommendation will appear as a pop-up or in the location specified in the display settings. Here’s an example of how it looks:
