Create Cross-sell Recommendations with Product Recommendations

The WebToffee eCommerce Marketing Automation app allows you to grow your cart value by automatically suggesting complementary ‘Cross-sell’ products to your shoppers. To set this up, navigate to Marketing & Sales > Recommendations in the web app and select ‘Cross-sell.’ You can define ‘trigger’ products, like a dining chair, and pair them with affordable add-ons, like chair cushions. These recommendations appear as popups during the ‘Add to Cart’ or ‘Checkout’ phase, making it easy for customers to discover items that go perfectly with their purchase.

How cross-sells work in a decor store:

  • If a shopper adds a Basic Wooden Chair → suggest a Cushion Set, Chair Cover, or Protector Pads.
  • If a shopper adds a Coffee Table → suggest a Decorative Vase, Table Runner, or Coasters.

Cross-sells don’t take anything out of the customer’s cart; they add useful little extras that make the purchase feel more complete.

Why Enable Cross-Sell Recommendations?

Activating cross-sell recommendations can:

  • Boost conversions by presenting shoppers with relevant add-ons they may not have considered.
  • Grow cart value naturally with low-effort suggestions.
  • Enhance customer satisfaction by making it easier for shoppers to discover products that pair well.

Prerequisite

  • Configure General Settings
    Before creating your first cross-sell bundle, set up how your recommendation pop-ups will look and behave across your store. To do this:
    • Go to the Recommendations page.
    • Click the General Settings icon in the top-right corner.
    • Adjust the styles and display options to match your store design.

Step 1: Access Cross-sell Recommendations

  1. From the app dashboard, go to Marketing & Sales → Recommendations.
  2. Select Cross-sell.
  3. Click Add cross-sell bundles.

Step 2: Set up the Bundle

  • Bundle Title → Give your cross-sell a descriptive name.
    • Example: Chair Accessories Bundle or Coffee Table Decor.
  • Keep names simple so you can identify them later, especially if you create multiple cross-sells for different product categories.

Step 3: Select Trigger Products or Categories

Now, choose what will trigger the cross-sell recommendation.

You can either:

  • Select specific products → Example: Rustic Wooden Dining Chair.
  • Select entire categories → Example: Dining Chairs or Coffee Tables.

Best practice: Use categories for broad recommendations (like suggesting cushions for all chairs), and use individual products for tailored recommendations (like pairing a specific coffee table with a matching lamp).

Next, add the complementary products you want to suggest.

  • You can choose up to three recommended products.
  • Keep the recommendations relevant and affordable. Cross-sells work best with smaller add-ons rather than expensive upgrades.

Examples for a decor store:

  • Trigger Product: Rustic Wooden Dining Chair → Recommended Products: Minimalist Vase, White Shade Table Lamp, Round White Coffee Table.

Step 5: Configure Display Settings

In this step, you decide where and how cross-sell offers should appear.

Display on Popups (Modal Overlays)

You can show recommendations at key moments in the customer journey:

  • Add to Cart Action → Display right after the customer adds a product.
  • Proceed to Checkout Action → Display before checkout, catching last-minute add-ons.
  • Post-purchase Page → Show recommendations on the thank-you page after an order is placed.

Example: If a shopper adds a Rustic Wooden Dining Chair to the cart, you can suggest Chair Cushions immediately in a pop-up.

Display in Email Editor

You can also add cross-sell recommendations inside your marketing emails by adding the Product Recommendation block.

Example: A post-purchase email for a sofa could suggest Throw Pillows or a Side Table.

Customize Popup Content

  • Title → Example: “Complete your chair setup with these add-ons!”
  • Button text → Example: “Add to cart”.

Step 6: Save the Bundle

Click Create bundle to save and activate your cross-sell.

Step 7: See It in Action

Once active, your cross-sell will be visible to shoppers at the points you configured.

Example Flow:

  • Shopper adds a Rustic Wooden Dining Chair to the cart.
  • A pop-up appears suggesting the Minimalist Vase, White Shade Table Lamp, and Round White Coffee Table.
  • The shopper selects the Round White Coffee Table and clicks Add to cart.
  • Both products are now in the cart.
